Develop Your Team

“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay”— Henry Ford, Founder, Ford Motor Company

The art to developing your team can be broken down into 5 simple, but effective steps. Of course whilst you are TeamBuildingPuzzlePieces developing your team you need to make sure you recruit the right people in the first place. Our article Recruitment – The Best Fit can help with this. Here we are talking about how to develop the team you already have.

Ensure your employee understands their role:
So you have an enthusiastic and eager new recruit or an employee who has been with the company a while, they need to understand, not only their role in the team but also in the company. Sit down with them and explain what their job description is, their role and responsibilities and what you expect them to achieve and by when. Talk to them about where they would like to be in the future and how you can help them to get there. This doesn’t have to be a long winded affair, a chat over a cup of coffee can cover most things, but keep it short and to the point. If you need to do two or three meetings to reinforce their understanding then that’s fine.

Provide relevant training:
Even the most effective and hard working employee can benefit from some training. Whether it be the Management Team or the new recruit, to get the best from your team you need to provide them with the tools to do the job. This can be a full bespoke training programme, one to one coaching or a really fun Teambuilding away day. What ever training needs you have SYLO Associates can provide ongoing solutions.

Don’t micromanage them:
Your team understands their roles, you have provided them relevant training, so leave them alone to do their job. Put simply, get out of your good people’s way!! Supervision is your role as a manager, but if you oversee every little detail and take jobs off people to do yourself you are not helping your team members, you will undermine them and knock their confidence. Leave them to do their jobs, let them know you will always answer any questions they have, or provide help when they need it. Saying that, you can’t go away and completely ignore them, you have to get the balance right. “Management Skills and getting the best from your teams” is one of SYLO Associates most popular training courses, if you would like information on this course or any other then email us.

Regular team meetings:
Have regular team meetings to keep everyone in the loop with current events and changes, good communication is key to a successful team. The most important part of a team meeting is to listen. The worst team meetings is when the team is being talked at. Make the meetings a productive and honest exchange of information and ideas, so that everyone feels involved and that their contribution matters. If there are actions from the meeting ensure they are dealt with and feedback given. There is no point in holding meetings and then not acting on the outcomes.

Plan for the Future:
Help your team grow and develop, then allow them to achieve success, even if that means letting them go. If you are developing your team you should always have people coming through ready to step into the next available slot, whether that has come available through natural growth, retirement or team members moving on to their next success. You can’t help them grow then hold onto them because letting them go will “disrupt” the team. Manage your own team and help them achieve their own goals.

Developing your team or building new teams could start with holding a Team Building event. This is a great way to help a team develop together and discover new skills and attributes they or their team mates didn’t know about themselves. Working well together is essential for maintaining a successful and efficient company, but often this isn’t something that just naturally occurs. Like all working relationships, you need to get to know each other and learn how to work well together. This is where a great team building event can help, of course it needs to be fun and not too far out of people’s comfort zones, otherwise it just becomes a rather uncomfortable experience for people to get through. At SYLO Associates, we are delighted to be able to offer team building events as part of a training package to help you and your team develop and become the team you would like to be. If you would like to discuss this or any other training needs, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss your requirements.
