Psychometric Testing – an untapped business tool?
Psychometrics is the study relating to the psychological measurement of how people work in different scenarios. It is split into 2 parts; one part measures their skills, knowledge, abilities, attitudes, traits and educational achievement. This is usually done through questionnaires, tests, raters’ judgements and personality tests. The second part involves statistical research on the measurement theory, such as item response theory or intra class correlation.
Businesses use psychometric tests when recruiting to determine who to invite to interview or to test some potential employee near the end of the recruiting process. They can also be used inside the workplace as means of employee personal development, ongoing assessment, leadership development and team building.
The Thomas International PPA assessment is an 8-10 minute test that provides an accurate insight into how people behave at work. It gives a greater level of certainty when recruiting, identifying how to make the learning and development budgets more efficient and helps to understand where to boost morale. It can also help managers spend less time on the underperformers and allow more attention to be given to those who really benefit the business. It offers a profile which details a person’s strengths and limits, their communication style, their value to the company, their motivations, their fears and how they handle pressure. This assessment is used to:
- Recruit the best applicant
- Identify the most deserving of promotion
- Put teams together
- Gauge employees morale
- Identify areas of development within the company
- Manage performance
- Resolve team issues
- Boost motivation
There is also an OPQ (Occupational Personality Questionnaire) which determine how an employee would behave in certain situations by assessing how compatible they would be in the company.
