Welcome to our Blogs
We have a great team of experts at SYLO. Our blogs tap into that expertise and so cover a wide range of subjects packed with insight and experience. We hope you enjoy them.
It’s been a busy few weeks with the Government’s announcement of the return back to work and updated guidance to the Coronavirus Job Retention scheme (CJRS) and detailed below are some of the key changes.
In light of the current circumstances we are working in, we are frequently being asked what does the law say in relation to managing home workers and ensuring their safety when using Display Screen Equipment (DSE).
So, the plans are coming to return to work. Finally, we are all seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, but let’s not get too excited just yet.
Mental Health Awareness Week takes place this year beginning on 18th May. In 2020 we will start that week having experienced at least 6 weeks of being in “lockdown”.
Please note that the below is based on best-practice advice. It may be subject to change when official guidance from the government is released. Last updated 11th May 2020.
Consider: Flexible working requests, Work arrangements with staff who have childcare or carer responsibilities, How to support staff who are sick or have relatives who are ill
Consider: Freezing replacement or recruitment of non-critical roles, reducing commitment with outsourced partners, reducing reliance on contractors or temporary workers
Consider: Extending Furlough employees using the Job Retention Scheme Consider whether to rotate employees on furlough.
Time off for Dependents – Employees may request a period of “Time off for dependants”, although this is usually only a few days to make alternative arrangements, however in the current Covid-19 crisis it may be reasonable to allow a longer period.
Sarah and Sally from SYLO are loyal and enthusiastic supporters of Lord Williams’s School. Their involvement includes the development and delivery of a range of Sixth Form workshops with an employment related focus, providing work experience placements, and attending the School Business Breakfast meetings. The advice and guidance that SYLO | Beyond HR provide is based on extensive business experience and a specialised knowledge of people recruitment and management. When working with our students, Sally and Sarah adapt this experience to the classroom situation to successfully engage and inform our young people in their preparation for the workplace.
I am delighted with and very grateful for the support SYLO has shown Lord Williams’s School and I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with them in the coming years.”
Nicky Stallwood, Personal Development Curriculum Manager, Lord Williams’s School, Thame
As the recently appointed voluntary Commercial Director of a small town sports club I was faced with the daunting task of establishing employment contracts with my part-time bar and catering staff, and also putting in place an HR documentation system. With the support of SYLO this has been accomplished to my total satisfaction and at a cost that I consider very reasonable. The SYLO team that I have worked with have been very fast, efficient and extremely professional and I cannot recommend them more highly.”
David Leggett (Marlow Sports Club Commercial Director)
We have been working with the SYLO | Beyond HR team for over five years now and in this time they have proven proactive, reliable and flexible. Their approach to training development and delivery is clearly client focused. The training delivery has been adapted to different levels of people within the business as well as different needs, plus the impact of some of the team being in different countries. They come with new ideas regarding programme content and delivery techniques too, which has allowed us to be agile in ever changing situations, especially prevalent this year. The feedback from delegates is that the programmes are both educational and enjoyable. Most of all, though, I know I can rely on SYLO to deliver a great programme on request, making my job managing the training easier.”
Claire Madle, Training Advisor, Jonas Software
Sarah allows our business to concentrate on the jobs we set out to do, and not have to worry about the HR input with a highly professional service that she provides.”
Stuart Barr, Director Stuart Barr CDR Ltd, BarrJoinery Ltd & BarrKitchens Ltd
I have had the pleasure of working with SYLO since March 2018 and I honestly couldn’t think of a better team to work with. SYLO joined Breathe’s Partner Programme in 2015, since when they have offered Breathe HR as part of their retained service packages they provide to their clients. These include pro-active support which enables SMEs to focus on their people, rather than admin. SYLO have achieved Breathe Gold Partner Status and in recognition of their many successes and their excellent service, they were named Breathe Partner of the Year 2019 at our annual partner conference.
The team at SYLO are all passionate about the service they provide which is fully tailored to their clients’ needs. This is one of the many reasons they stand out from the crowd. They are an absolute joy to work with (I feel like I’m an extension of their team!) and I would not hesitate to recommend their services to SMEs.”
Bethan Roles, Partner Account Manager, Breathe
Having appointed SYLO for a one off project for our organisation we were extremely impressed by their understanding of the situation. The confidential professional manner how they approached the project, and how they gained the confidence of those taking part. Which resulted in a very comprehensive and informative report which will be of great use to us in the future, so much so, we have asked SYLO to undertake another project for us.”
We contacted SYLO back in 2013 as a growing company in need of some HR support. Having experienced a period of fast growth we needed to take a step back and review where we were and what we needed to do to ensure we had a strong HR infrastructure from which to grow further. SYLO have proved invaluable in helping us find our way through the complexity of HR policy and procedure.
Since the initial contact, we have doubled in size and the partnership between Doig Furniture and SYLO has gone from strength to strength. They have been there every step of the way providing endless support with everything from recruitment to employment contracts to business development, and everything in between!”
Duncan Doig, Managing Director Doig Furniture
During what has proved a very trying time for most businesses, we decided to use the opportunity to rework and update all aspects of our HR & GDPR policies, as well as ensure we had solid and up to date health and safety policies.
With what can be a very daunting, and complicated set of processes, we engaged SYLO to help guide us through. We have been very impressed with the speed and attention to detail that has been demonstrated by each member of the team.”
Simon Percy, Managing Director, Little Shadow
SYLO delivered on the brief by matching me with an excellent coach, Elizabeth, and someone that I trust implicitly.
The coaching is an invaluable investment of my time and enables me to step off the treadmill, re-focus and ensure that I am in the best position possible to execute my duties and add value to this fantastic business.”
Rich Blunden, Group Managing Director, Monkey Puzzle Day Nurseries
As a small business we outsource our HR and spent some time reviewing various options before deciding on SYLO. We’ve now been supported by their team for over two years; they have handled everything in an extremely timely and professional manner. Communication is quick and clear and regular reviews mean we stay fully compliant with all regulation. The cloud based HR system has proved particularly helpful. I would recommend SYLO without hesitation.”
Gareth Wakefield, Chief Technical Officer, Xerion Healthcare
We found SYLO very approachable and professional – they took the time to understand the specific needs of our business and delivered a course which has provided real assistance and focus to time management across the various elements of our business.”
